:- 3.0 out of 5 stars from Gay French-Ottaviani -- For those who love the world of dance : Mark Morris is a unique voice in the dance world in the most impressive years of the Joffrey, Bejart, The Stuttgart Ballet, Twyla Tharp and the later years of Merce." Behind the scenes" stories told that are honest and often bitchy but are a real part of the business of theater and dance in particular. Not much is hidden in his take on the choreographers he worked with and the dancers he knew, though he may disagree with me vehemently and I would expect that. Driven by his love of music and the particular way he needed to express that music, music of all derivations, Mark Morris was a true performer and gifted choreographer. He worked hard sometimes harming himself, to always be excessively true to his vision. He is funny too. ( Reviewed in the United States on November 19, 2020 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Aggressive Consumer -- Best Dance Memoir I've Read : I've read many dance memoirs this year and Morris's beats them all. He doesn't pussyfoot around (or pas de chat, for that matter) about likes and dislikes for numerous characters he has known and worked with over the years. Likewise, he is seems candid about sexuality and various experiences, sexual, spiritual, etc., over the years. Like much of this genre, there's plenty of name-dropping, but Morris gives equal billing to less-famous people he has known, loved, and worked with over many decades. If I were to cite a shortcoming, it's in the chapters organized around Morris's major works. Without seeing the choreography and the dancing, the going got a little tough at times for this reader. Thankfully, these chapters were sprinkled with enough anecdotes to keep the story going and keep it interesting. I hope to see the dances and then reread those chapters. - 4.0 out of 5 stars from Mayflower -- Former MMDG Dancer : As a former dancer of the MMDG, I was fascinated to read Mark’s memoir. It was good! I think he could have gone a little deeper with some topics and perhaps could have shared a bit more self-reflection. Engaging, entertaining, enriching- I couldn’t put it down and relished the moments I could revisit the story of this creative soul. My background is in lit and visual arts and I came to this book seeking a master’s understanding and vision to nourish my comprehension of the language of dance and movement. I feel satisfied (understatement) but also, lucky that my first venture into dance research led me to try to see through Mark Morris’ eyes— his at-times Ricean aesthetic / worldview being familiar, relatable territory for me, ideologically speaking. It was like sitting down with an old dear trusted friend who is telling you the story of his fascinating life. Definitely gossipy, but in a kind way. Fun, witty, honest, joyful, hysterically funny, poignant, soulful, inspirational - just like his dances. Reading it made me feel happy that Mark Morris exists. Full disclosure, I played in his band for many productions and loved every minute of it.. It was so satisfying to work with a creative mind that understands music on such a profound level and it's a also a joy to read how he thinks about music. Here is a good example: "One reason I make dances is to trick people into hearing music better." I borrowed the book from a friend, but the book is full of so many great quotes like this that I wanted to underline, I realized that I needed to get my own copy. Read it! You won't be sorry. I have followed Mark’s career from his early days and am honored to be a member of his board. I became involved initially as an outside consultant when Mark and Nancy Umanoff agreed to work with the Brooklyn Parkinson Group to incorporate and host the outstanding Dance for Parkinson’s Disease program, which has been expanded globally by David Leventhal, who danced with MMDG for a decade before branching out. The prose and personal details in the book are absorbing and deeply personal. Thanks for writing with such candor, Mark. Your brilliance is revealed throughout--a reading delight!
